The FDCPA strictly limits how collectors may contact other people about your debt. Generally they may reach out to third parties only to locate you — and even then, they can't reveal that you owe a debt.

What they can't do

  • Tell your family, neighbors, or coworkers that you owe a debt
  • Contact third parties repeatedly
  • Keep contacting your workplace after being told the employer prohibits it
  • Use postcards or envelopes that reveal the debt

If they cross the line

Improper third-party disclosure is an FDCPA violation with statutory damages. Document who was contacted, when, and what was said.
