Metro 2 is the standardized data format furnishers use to report accounts to the bureaus. Every tradeline on your report is a set of coded fields — and when those fields contradict each other, your score pays for it.
The five errors to look for
- Balance on a sold account — after a sale, the original creditor must report zero; a duplicate balance double-counts your debt
- Wrong date of first delinquency — controls when the account falls off; later dates are re-aging
- Status/payment-rating conflicts — a charge-off (status 97) with a "current" payment rating is internally impossible
- Missing dispute flag — once you dispute, the account must carry the XB/XC compliance code
- Stale "date reported" — old data presented as current activity
Why field-level disputes win
A dispute that names the exact Metro 2 field and the exact inconsistency can't be honestly "verified" without someone checking it. That specificity is what separates deletions from denials.
