Debt Settlement vs. Debt Validation: Which First?

Validate first, then settle. Demanding proof costs nothing, and it often reveals the collector can't fully document the debt — which strengthens your settlement position or ends the matter entirely.

Why order matters

If you settle first, you've confirmed the debt and paid — even if it was time-barred, unverifiable, or not yours. Validation is your free look under the hood before spending money.

The sequence

  • Send a validation request within 30 days of first contact
  • Review what comes back — is the chain and amount documented?
  • Check the statute of limitations and reporting accuracy
  • Only then negotiate — ideally pay-for-delete, in writing
